The Mid-Term Conference was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on May 25th, 2010. The general purpose of the meeting was, half-way through Phase 1, to present the first results of AEGOS related SDI initiatives and project as well as capacity building initiatives. Beyond, the aim also was to invite end-users of the new Spatial Data Infrastructure for Georesources in Africa to express their needs for innovative products, services and spin-off projects as well as initiate new partnerships for implementing the Phase 2 of AEGOS.

The conference attracted nearly 90 participants from 27 countries, including data managers and decision makers in the fields of SDI and geology-related natural resources in Africa (government members, academic staff, researchers, public and private investors, consultants, end-users of geospatial information). The conference was opened by Minister Hon. William Ngeleja (Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Tanzania).

He underlined the importance of the AEGOS outputs in promoting a stronger involvement of the various public and private stakeholders to manage strategic access to data and a better use of georesources. A further major statement during the conference enhanced/observed thatProjects such as AEGOS could team up with other ongoing initiatives to promote capacity building, data production and sharing on resources, to share facilities for the benefit of African countries”.

The Mid-Term Conference concluded a full week of annual technical meetings including a steering committee meeting and general assembly held at the SEAMIC (Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre) office gathering up to 45 representatives of project partners.
