The second workshop of work package 4 was held together with workshop 3b “User-oriented products and services” and organised jointly by the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) and the Direction des Mines et de la Géologie (MMI, Senegal). It was attended by 56 participants including representatives from Direction Générale de la Planification des Ressources en Eau, Société des Pétroles du Sénégal, Université Cheikh Anta Diop – Dakar, ect.
The workshop was formally opened by Hon. Abdoulaye BALDE, Minister of Mines and Industry of Senegal.
The session devoted to the presentation of the proposed projects included:
- Senegalese governance map;
- Mineral predictivity maps for Ghana;
- Sustainable mining knowledge base of Southern Africa;
- Geo-Tourism in Central Copperbelt of Zambia and DR Congo;
- Locating high-temperature geothermal resources in the East African Rift System;
- Hydrogeological mapping in Ethiopia;
- Case study in Catanda (Angola) innovative approach and presentation of related data using AEGOS SDI.
The criteria for project selection were presented and discussed. They were accepted as follows:
- Project should be based on AEGOS SDI and cover capacity building;
- Project in which the components are innovative;
- Project should create user oriented/innovativeproducts and services;
- Project should meet end-user needs;
- Initial funding source should be confirmed;
- Information about the project background, connection to other projects and initiatives;
- Cost estimate of project components (IT, capacity building, others);
- Elaboration of a road map for AEGOS test beds.
The creation of the End-user Committee was presented and discussed with the presentation of the institutions who declare their willingness to participate. 44 organisations proposed their involvement. The main propositions are:
- The End-user Committees will be implemented at national level;
- International organisations (SEAMIC, RCMRD etc.) could be also members of the End-user Committee;
- Work package 4 group will be responsible for the contacts between AEGOS and Committees;
- End users will express their needs and have asay in the development of AEGOS services (discovery, delivery and value adding to data): it will be an independent advisory group;
- Committees will build a bridge between AEGOS service providers and public and private stakeholders in Africa Geoscience communities.
The workshop ended with an interesting visit to the “Centre de Documentation et du Cadastre Minier” in Dakar city center.
