AEGOS at PROMIN' 2009 Burkina

work_package_member_4_article_2 The fourth international PROMIN meeting (Journées de Promotion Minière) was held in Burkina Faso on December 1st-4th, 2009. Through the general topic of the meeting “Mines and Sustainable Development”, Burkina Faso aimed at launching a discussion on growing potential of mining activities and their impact on local populations.

The major themes were covered:

1) Contributions of mines to fighting poverty;

2) Taking into account the interests of local people communities;

3) Environmental questions;

4) Dealing with post-mining situation.

The conference has attracted nearly 1,000 participants from 19 countries, including mining companies, geological surveys, national and international African organizations, universities and commercial partners. In total, 27 talks and 88 exposition booths were presented during the
first three days in Ouagadougou. On December 4th, 172 delegates visited three selected mines:
Mana, Kalsaka and Essakane.

Moreover, on December 3rd, the kick-off meeting of the World Bank project “Africa Mineral Governance Program (AMGP)” was    held in parallel to the PROMIN conference. The project implementation will be carried out on a twicefive years duration and undertaken in collaboration with the Economic Community of

West African States (ECOWAS), West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and Mano River Union (MRU).

The principal objectives of the AMGP are:
1) Good governance and sustainable management of mineral resources,
2) Development of geological information systems and promotion of private investment,
3) Enabling benefits and value addition to national and regional economies.

70 delegates representing 15 countries attended this important meeting. All through PROMIN’2009, AEGOS was presented with a kakemono, a poster and flyers at the BRGM and University of Ouagadougou exposition
booths. Jean-Philippe Rançon (BRGM, France), Lenka Baratoux (IRD, France), Ousmane Cissé
(MMI, Senegal) and Abdoulaye Koné (WAEMU) attended both the PROMIN conference and the
AMGP kick-off meeting. AEGOS project was further introduced to numerous representatives
from African governmental and non-governmental organisations and mining industry. Fruitful contacts were strenghtned in particular with the World Bank.
