The major themes were covered: 1) Contributions of mines to fighting poverty; 2) Taking into account the interests of local people communities; 3) Environmental questions; 4) Dealing with post-mining situation. The conference has attracted nearly 1,000 participants from 19 countries, including mining companies, geological surveys, national and international African organizations, universities and commercial partners. In total, 27 talks and 88 exposition booths were presented during the Moreover, on December 3rd, the kick-off meeting of the World Bank project “Africa Mineral Governance Program (AMGP)” was held in parallel to the PROMIN conference. The project implementation will be carried out on a twicefive years duration and undertaken in collaboration with the Economic Community of
West African States (ECOWAS), West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and Mano River Union (MRU). The principal objectives of the AMGP are: 70 delegates representing 15 countries attended this important meeting. The fourth international PROMIN meeting (Journées de Promotion Minière) was held in Burkina Faso on December 1st-4th, 2009. Through the general topic of the meeting “Mines and Sustainable Development”, Burkina Faso aimed at launching a discussion on growing potential of mining activities and their impact on local populations.
