| Workshop 4a “Generic approach for the generation of user-oriented products and services dedicated to georesources”
Lusaka, Zambia – 25-27th August, 2009
This workshop was organized and hosted in Lusaka by the School of Mines, University of Zambia (GD-SOM-UNZA) in collaboration with the Polish Geological Institute (PGI). It was attended by 36 participants: partners in charge of innovative project (WP4), identification of data themes, products and services (WP3) and invited guests from Zambia. The latter represented the Geological Survey of Zambia, the Ministry of Energy and Water Development, Department of Water Affairs, International Water Resource Management/University of Zambia, Groundwater Resources for Southern Province and the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research. The workshop was formally opened with a welcome address given by Hon. Maxwell M. B. Mwale, Minister, Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development. An announcement was made in a press release and reports in two national Zambian newspapers, radios and, for the first time, in the national television evening news (ZNBC). The major topics of this workshop included: report on activities and preliminary results of the WP 4 focusing on the first questionnaire concerning recent and ongoing projects on georesources in Africa; exchange of results further to the questionnaires analysis between WP 4 and WP 3 partners. The generic approach for the generation of user-oriented products and services dedicated to georesources was discussed and formulated through a new diagramme. Examples Cooperation between African and European Union countries in the field of geology-related natural resources were presented and potential innovative projects were identified through several thematic break-out group sessions. As for mineral resources, the exploration component is a key factor for economic development (pilot study related to the West African Exploration Initiative) whereas the need is growing for appropriate and efficient management of the mining waste (pilot study in Zambia). Transboundary resources management in connection with the regional development corridors in Africa was also discussed as well as the integrated approach of mineral potential dedicated to industrial and agricultural development.
