| Workshop 6b" Definition of training infrastructure and organisation" Virer Hanover, Germany (16-17 November 2009)
The results of a survey conducted over 30 organisations earlier in 2009 show that considerable human resources are available in the countries that submitted the assessment questionnaire. Most of the staff is skilled in producing reports and maps but qualifications in capturing, archiving, harmonising data as well as in administrating IT-equipment is not sufficiently available. A gap also exists between the existing and required skills in data management and in the fields of data modelling, GIS and programming of web applications for generating added-value products and services. Advanced knowledge on marketing, legislation and project management is also required for operating AEGOS as well as on national policies and frameworks for data ownership. Furthermore, the participants worked on outputs of a first inventory relative to the training centres identified in Africa and Europe and which offer adequate courses to meet the AEGOS requirements.
To get more practical information on the capacity building situation in Africa and Europe, Prof. Ripke and Prof. Schweikart from the University of Applied Sciences (BHT) in Berlin, Germany, and Prof. I. Nyambe from the Geology Department, School of Mines in Lusaka, Zambia, gave oral presentations on their experiences as lecturers and organisers of training courses. The participants agreed that the training during the implementation phase of the project should be provided in form of short courses (less than 3 months) which will be offered by skilled AEGOS partners and educational institutions. The outcomes provide a good overview of the human resources needed for running a geodata infrastructure in Africa and also improved the common understanding of basic project concepts and guidelines.
