The second workshop of work package 6 was kindly hosted by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and organised jointly with the Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre (SEAMIC), co-leaders of WP6.

Sixteen participants from 11 African and European partners attended this meeting and carried out a collaborative working programme using a new approach successfully. After the welcome by F. Schwarz, Head of the BGR-Sub-Department International Cooperation, reports of all WP6 activities performed over the previous months were presented, including the first workshop WP6a in Tervuren.

For an innovative brainstorming, the participants used puzzles to understand the future AEGOS Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) while discussing its components, functions and potential difficulties. Using this basis as common understanding, the activities for implementing and operating the SDI were presented on posters and discussed in small breakout groups for correction and/or completion. Then, these posters were used to conduct a gap analysis which included the identification of the qualifications available at African geoscientific organisations and the skills which are presently missing and therefore need to be improved by training

The results of a survey conducted over 30 organisations earlier in 2009 show that considerable human resources are available in the countries that submitted the assessment questionnaire. Most of the staff is skilled in producing reports and maps but qualifications in capturing, archiving, harmonising data as well as in administrating IT-equipment is not sufficiently available. A gap also exists between the existing and required skills in data management and in the fields of data modelling, GIS and programming of web applications for generating added-value products and services. Advanced knowledge on marketing, legislation and project management is also required for operating AEGOS as well as on national policies and frameworks for data ownership. Furthermore, the participants worked on outputs of a first inventory relative to the training centres identified in Africa and Europe and which offer adequate courses to meet the AEGOS requirements.

To get more practical information on the capacity building situation in Africa and Europe, Prof. Ripke and Prof. Schweikart from the University of Applied Sciences (BHT) in Berlin, Germany, and Prof. I. Nyambe from the Geology Department, School of Mines in Lusaka, Zambia, gave oral presentations on their experiences as lecturers and organisers of training courses. The participants agreed that the training during the implementation phase of the project should be provided in form of short courses (less than 3 months) which will be offered by skilled AEGOS partners and educational institutions.

The outcomes provide a good overview of the human resources needed for running a geodata infrastructure in Africa and also improved the common understanding of basic project concepts and guidelines.
