"Definition of common strategies for capacity building and training” - Tervuren, Belgium, June 8th - 9th, 2009.

The workshop organised by the BGR and the RBINS was held at the Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren (Belgium), and attended by 16 participants.

Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren, BelgiumAfter the welcoming speeches by G. Gryseels,  Director of the Royal Museum, M. Urvois, and M. Toloczyki, the programme of the meeting and the objectives of WP6 were presented. A report of all activities performed within the first project period was given to the participants. It included information on the participation at the Euro-AfriCa Cooperation Forum on ICT Research (March 2009, Brussels) and the GEO-Capacity Building Committee (April 2009, Athens).

The first day of the workshop focused on the questionnaire conducted by WP 1, 2, 3 and 6. The results of the chapter on the availability and skills of human resources, and an analysis of the answers and conclusions drawn from the questionnaire were presented. The information on existing skills and knowledge were used as a basis for break out group discussions used to define the skills and knowledge of personnel needed for implementing and running AEGOS, and to define gaps in capacity building at geoscientific institutions in Africa. On the second day, ongoing activities on inventorying training centres in Africa and Europe with experience in capacity building were discussed and a list of questions to be used as the basis for consulting numerous training institutions was prepared. The approach and schedule for finalising the inventory of training centres and best practices relevant for AEGOS was debated.

Finally, the structure and content of the deliverables to be submitted in M15 and the tasks required for their compilation were discussed. The next workshop 6b will take place from 16th to 18th November 2009 at the BGR in Hannover, Germany.
